Mild upgrading of biomass pyrolysis vapors via ex-situ catalytic pyrolysis over an iron-montmorillonite catalyst

Pyrolysis vapor upgrading can improve the stability of pyrolysis liquids to facilitate storage, transport, and drop in use as fuels chemical feedstocks existing refining infrastructure. This study investigates a low cost iron based catalyst for mild in-situ fast vapors increase liquid. Iron-doped montmorillonite K10 catalysts were characterized by ICP-OES, BET porosimetry, XRD, XPS, NH3-TPD. The effect three process parameters are evaluated Box-Behnken experimental design using fixed bed. Predictive model equations developed on response surface methodology describe loading, biomass ratio, bed temperature yields liquids, non-condensable gas, coke catalyst. Compared non-catalytic pyrolysis, over reduce liquid gas catalytically cracked into lighter molecules. Liquid yield decreases with C:B ratio while increase. By increasing Fe loading from 0% 10%, coking 11.7% 3.5% yield. Iron 10% is least susceptible coking, but results greater amounts polyaromatics product. According GCMS analysis upgraded have lower concentrations unstable carboxylic acids aldehydes. In addition, formation phenols shift towards fraction alkyl methoxy leading more stable product result upgrading. Overall, iron-doped demonstrated be viable, vapors.
